Tis a sad day. My PS3, which I have nicknamed “The Beast,” has spun its last disc. After trying for hours to resuscitate its Blue-Ray drive and an hour of talking to Sony tech support, the Beast just couldn’t do it; it wouldn’t recognize a single disc. It happened last night when I was trying to enjoy my usual rounds of Call of Duty 4, but the game took an unreasonably long amount of time “Downloading Game Settings.” Thinking nothing of it, I reset my PS3; however afterwards, the disc icon just wouldn’t appear in the cross media bar.
Wait. It gets better. I threw my hands up and finally called Sony in anticipation of a thick accent and scripted “technical” support. Wouldn’t you know? I got what was expected. There was one statement, however, that pierced through the representative’s thick accent straight to my cognitive reasoning centers and struck my heart with sharp searing pain. In an almost seemingly scripted manner and with a voice filled with artificial sympathy, the Sony representative said that I was one day past my extended waranty. Fate, it seems, is playing a cruel joke on me.
So like a scene from the end of Old Yeller, rather than seeing my PS3 live a life robbed of a crucial function, I took it into the back and shot it. Not really. But I did feel like shooting someone at Activision. Aparently this is happening to a small minority on the Internet. Cases can be seen here, here, here, and here. So what gives Activision? Could it be just a coincidence that my PS3’s Blu-Ray drive crocked up while playing Call of Duty 4? Or was Call of Duty 4 the cause of the problem? It wouldn’t surprise me if Call of Duty 4 was the cause of the problem as there have been reports that Tony Hawk, an Activision game, have been “bricking” PS3s as it has happened to my friend Ivan. Oh Activision what say you? I’m losing faith.
I guess it’s back to the Xbox 360, or more properly known to me as “The Bucket.” Expect funeral services for my PS3 to be held later this week.
