AJ’s Note: Sean Payne has been a long time friend since high school. We were 2 out of the 3 people in our graduating class at Chaparral to graduate with a Certificate of Concentration in Computer Science. I remember approaching him one day, this was about during the time the game Max Payne was out, saying, ”Sean Payne, Max Payne”. He just kinda rolled his eyes at me. Suffice to say we were the top geeks in our class. I asked him to do a guest blog for me.
Well, this is the first time I’ve ever written on ajpapa.net as a guest blogger and I hope that what I write here will be good reading and relavant to our geeky everyday lives. However, for my post, I’ve decided to target those people who are standing around, pondering what they should buy for their geek. Let’s face it, the girlfriend/wife/fiancee/lady-friend of geeks know that they want to get a present for their geek that will make a geek basically, for lack of a better phrase, geek out. Unfortunately, most things geeks want are usually really expensive and difficult to find, but hopefully this blog will make things a little bit easier.
To start, I will begin with some of the most expensive gifts, cell phones. Now, this past year, a lot of cool new phones have come out, but for us geeks, only the ones that do something really special are deserving of our drool. Phones like the AT&T 8525 (or its predecessor, the Tilt, better known as the HTC TyTN II) are cool in that they are all-in-one devices that allow us geeks to check email, (partially) surf the net, organize our hectic geeky schedule, chat with our other geeky friends, and even install additional programs and games to make our phone do even more. But the downside is their expensive pricetag and their bulky nature. Now, I recently received this year’s ThinkGeek catalog of some of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. In the phone realm of things, one item in their catalog really caught my eye: the IMOBILE Cell Phone/PDA Wristwatch. For those of us who used to dream of having Dick Tracy’s wristwatch communicator, this is for you (and what geek hasn’t dreamed of such a thing?). It is a full-featured GSM phone (sorry, it doesn’t work on Verizon or Sprint) with a touch-screen, speakerphone, and Bluetooth, and is said to even be able to play music and movies! Unlike the 8525/TyTN II’s hefty $400+ price tag (w/o service plan), this little guy comes in at only $250 smackeroos! The pros: its small (for a phone), its got Bluetooth, and its a phone! The cons: it isn’t as robust as other PDA phones, its a bulky for a watch, can’t surf the net. It’s still way cool though!
My next gift idea is for every geek: shirts. And let me tell you, there are a ton of them you can get. But what’s perfect about a shirt is that it shows just what kind of geek you are! Heck, we’re proud to be geeks, so we’re going to flaunt it! There are a number of places out there that have geeky shirts, especially at ThinkGeek, but if you can’t find one, then check out your local Hot Topic for some cartoon-based ones. At Hot Topic, for instance, there are a few Mario shirts that geeks are sure to enjoy.
And lastly, for those of you who are like me and running out of money faster than they are getting it, you can still give something that shows you care and appreciate their geekiness by getting them little geeky toys. Again, a good helping can be found at ThinkGeek, at Hot Topic, and even at Spencer’s gifts. Stickers, decals, buttons, toys, they’re all game for a geek, and anything that shows that you appreciate them for being a geek with a certain fascination for something (Star Wars Micro Lightsabers or Plush Microbes anyone?) will definitely be a winner, and also won’t break the bank!
So there you have it folks, my guest blog on how you can search around for some sweet stuff that geeks will definitely enjoy regardless of age!
